Nineteen Eighty-Four (also published as 1984) is a dystopian novel and cautionary tale by English writer George Orwell. It was published on 8 June 1949 by Secker & Warburg as Orwell's ninth and final book completed in his lifetime. Thematically, it centers on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance and repressive regimentation of people and behaviors within society. Orwell, a democratic socialist, modelled the authoritarian state in the novel on the Soviet Union in the era of Stalinism, and Nazi Germany. More broadly, the novel examines the role of truth and facts within societies and the ways in which they can be manipulated.

I read this book while I was still in high school, I must admit that was a very long time ago. Our country was in the cold war at the time with the Soviet Union and needless to say all of us were worried about nuclear war. The book is a dystopian novel about socialism. I know this book is fiction but Orwell must have been able to look into the future because todays world sure is starting to look like the one he describes. We have wokeness, free speech is attacked, transgenderism, LGBTQ+, cancel culture, pro Palestine protesters, political corruption, etc. All things that lead to totalitarianism. I hope all young people will go to their local library and check out 1984 by George Orwell, I know its not being taught in the schools anymore. Put down the phone and read and educate yourself before its too late.
